The Connor Brothers’ interest in undermining our casual acceptance of cultural norms is reflected in their extraordinary background. They themselves began their career masquerading as innocent twins who had emerged traumatised from a Californian cult and were struggling to make sense of the world through their art. Their fictional persona was designed to protect their real personal histories from the public gaze but it captured the imagination of the art world. Their success led them to break cover and they revealed their true identities as British artists Mike Snelle and James Golding; but they retained their famous pseudonym, which serves to remind us to question our assumptions, other people, and ourselves.
"It is the paradox of art that artifice is often the best way to depict reality."
